Sustainable Design | Innovation in Harmony with Nature
This project embodies a commitment to sustainable living and architectural excellence, proving that heritage character and contemporary efficiency can coexist to enhance both home and lifestyle. The clients central motivation is sustainable urban living through passive solar design, renewable energy solar solutions, and strategic use of natural materials to create an energy-efficient sanctuary on a compact site.
A north-facing gallery lounge, living, and kitchen extension, wrapped in high-performance triple glazing, ensures year-round comfort and thermal efficiency. Timber elements, used as both external cladding and structural support for the rooftop garden, reinforce the connection between architecture and nature.
An Enclosed Meditation Garden for Every Season
At the heart of the home, the courtyard garden, framed by floor-to-ceiling glazing, becomes a tranquil oasis. Designed for seasonal immersion, it allows shifting light, dappled shadows, and the interplay of wind and foliage to enrich daily life, fostering calm, contemplation, and connection to nature.
Sustainable Urban Living | Smart & Self-Sufficient
The renovation maximises energy efficiency through a smart solar zoning strategy, designed to balance seasonal extremes in a temperate climate. Photovoltaic panels are strategically integrated into the new extension and rooftop garden above the garage, optimising solar capture without compromising the architectural integrity of the home. Underground water storage solutions optimise space, efficiently recycling water to sustain the lush rooftop and meditation gardens. Cont'd...

Cont'd..
This project establishes an inspired urban model, demonstrating how intelligent design enhances space, sustainability, and future adaptability. The rear service lane offers potential for future expansion while preserving the integrity of the early 20th-century Colonial-style streetscape, ensuring solar panels remain discreetly integrated.
Honouring the Colonial Façade | Bridging Past & Future
While not within a heritage overlay, the renovation thoughtfully enhances the Colonial style façade by replacing weatherboards and restoring moulding details, ensuring continuity with the historic streetscape while seamlessly incorporating modern sustainability principles.
Open Plan Living | A Gallery of Light & Warmth
The open plan living area functions as a gallery like space, as French doors open, allowing an effortless freedom to enjoy the enclosed garden; dissolving boundaries between indoors and out. Passive solar design ensures a natural interplay of light, warmth, and ventilation, creating a dynamic living environment that evolves with the seasons and daily rhythms.
