West Brunswick House | Heritage & Contemporary Renovation

“Robert provided us a homely contemporary design integrating the existing heritage frontage of our home. We enjoy the flexibility the design provides with transition between the late 19th century Edwardian Style house and contemporary open plan arrangement that enables seamless movement to the courtyard, wine cellar and studio. Robert successfully navigated our brief through multiple planning dispensations and VCAT to realise our dream home” - Paul & Giselle | West Brunswick House

West Brunswick House | Heritage & Contemporary Renovation

Alterations & Additions | Heritage & Contemporary Architecture

This renovation is a seamless fusion of heritage charm and modern design, respecting the character of the original Edwardian home while incorporating contemporary additions that enhance both function and form.

A Dialogue Between Past & Present

Set within a heritage streetscape, the design carefully preserves the front façade and side brick wall, restoring period details with materials such as Hoffman brickwork to honour the home’s early 20th century authenticity.

Beyond this preserved frontage, a striking two storey rear extension transforms the single level Edwardian residence, introducing a private courtyard, a two-storey studio, a double garage, and a basement wine cellar. Situated on a narrow 10 metre wide corner site, the design skillfully navigates complex regulations to achieve a harmonious balance between heritage and contemporary architecture.

Reimagining Space

The ground floor retains its original two bedrooms, study, and lounge. The removal of a 1950s lean-to extension makes way for an expansive dining area, kitchen, entertainment space, laundry, bathroom, and powder room, discreetly tucked beneath the staircase.

Above, the first-floor addition extends over the courtyard as a sculptural modern form. The master bedroom, framed by expansive southeast-facing windows, offers breathtaking views of Melbourne’s skyline, while a floor-to-ceiling glazed ensuite overlooks the private courtyard below.

Heritage Integrity & Urban Presence

A continuous Hoffman brick wall runs along the side street, linking the home to its historic urban fabric while defining its contemporary identity.

The new first floor addition remains subtle and recessive, delicately set back behind the existing Edwardian roofline, ensuring the home retains its presence within the heritage streetscape.
