Renovation Alterations & Additions
This renovation embodies the beauty of heritage and traditional architecture, carefully restoring and enhancing a Federation-style home with timeless design elements. The client sought a sensitive yet transformative approach, maintaining the home’s historic character while introducing functional enhancements for modern living.
Honouring Tradition, Enhancing Liveability
The existing front façade, side, and rear brickwork—which shares a party wall with the neighbouring property—has been meticulously restored, ensuring the renovation remains true to its late 19th- and early 20th-century Federation roots. Through careful investigation, both existing and new materials were selected to match the period style, reinforcing the home’s architectural integrity.
Set on a narrow 8-metre-wide site, this project transforms a single-storey Federation home into a thoughtfully designed two-storey residence, blending heritage authenticity with enhanced spatial functionality.
Reimagining Space
The ground floor retains its original two bedrooms, sitting room, and lounge, preserving their traditional function. However, the rear kitchen, bathroom, and laundry—modified multiple times over the past century—were removed, as they obstructed valuable northern natural light.
The new design introduces an open-plan kitchen, dining, music, and entertainment space, where light and landscape interact to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. A new laundry, bathroom, and powder room discreetly separate the formal and informal areas.
A new staircase leads to the first-floor addition, where an attic-style retreat provides children’s bedrooms, study spaces, and a bathroom, forming a secluded yet connected upper-level zone.

Light, Space & Connection
At the heart of the design is an interior balcony and double-height atrium, allowing sunlight to flood the home while offering glimpses of the landscaped garden and trees beyond. This space enhances natural ventilation, wellbeing, and a seamless indoor-outdoor connection.
The ground-floor sunroom extends from the traditional-style kitchen and lounge, opening directly to the garden, further enhancing the sense of space and tranquillity.
Heritage Integrity & Streetscape Presence
From the street, the home’s Federation-style façade and side elevation remain the defining heritage features, while the first-floor addition is carefully recessed, sitting subtly behind the existing Federation roofline. This ensures the home continues to respect the historic streetscape, maintaining its connection to the late 19th- and early 20th-century urban fabric.
